Autumn Home Maintenance Checklist

Autumn is here and the weather is beautiful. Warm, mild temps offer the best
time to prepare your home for winter. Forecasters are predicting a cold and
snowy winter for the Ohio Valley so don’t put off preparing and protecting your
home. To make things easy and get you started, here is a check list of items I
find to be most important. Hope you find these helpful! – Dee Mohr

1. Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent water damage to basement and
exterior surfaces.
2. Inspect windows, doors and exterior for gaps in weatherstripping and
caulking to help prevent drafts.
3. Repair damaged walkways & fix/repair loose railings to prevent falls and
injuries.
4. Inspect roof using binoculars for damaged or missing shingles. Also check
for damage to flashing around chimneys and vents.
5. Winterize outdoor faucets by shutting off valves and draining the line.
Make sure seal around faucet is in good condition to help prevent any
freezing of the lines.
6. Have fireplace inspected for cracks and chimney professionally cleaned to
ensure safe operation and prevent fire from creosote buildup.
7. Hire a qualified technician to service furnace and make sure humidifier is
working properly. Also, good time to change your furnace filter.
8. Replace batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test to
make sure they are working properly. Don’t forget to make sure all fire
extinguishers are fully charged
